When the Tamagotchi was first released in 1996 it was a super hit, selling more than 70 million units. This virtual pet craved your attention and appealed to your inner human. It would eventually die out if the appeals were unanswered.

With technology becoming more robust, more single user games were created. Games like Lemonade Tycoon (2002) which gave you a sense of fulfillment in running your own lemonade stand, earning and spending money, making decisions, getting a defining sense of self, were a hit.

The Sims of SIM city were another story. First released in 2000, this was a simulation game in which a player could control the lives of characters, their daily activities, stimulating the inner GOD in the player.  farmville

Come social networking, and now you have single player games, which help you to connect with others in your network, get them on board, get them hooked and still continue being master of your domain, lord of all that you survey. Farmville in  particular is one that I have been playing for a few days now.

Farmville is funded by direct purchases of Farmville money or through its partner sites which would have a user participate in a survey or other such activity.

The thrill of living vicariously through a virtual character, earning coins, making sure that your crops don’t rot, is becoming addictive. There must be a subliminal message that is being passed through platform. What is the chord that they have struck that resonates through ones being, that makes them wake up in the morning, forego their coffee and visit a pixelated farm to ensure everything is fine??!!

The wires are awash with news that India’s GMR group is in talks with Tom Hicks for the buy out of Liverpool FC. This after it was reported that the talks with the Khorafi family of Kuwait didn’t go anywhere. GMR (also the initials of the owner) is ranked 198th on the Forbes Billionaires list and owns business ranging from real estate, infrastructure and construction to energy and more recently sports. GMR owns the Delhi Daredevils team on the IPL cricket league. There can’t be smoke without a fire, however Hicks has denied they are in talks.

After the acquisition of Jaguar and Rover, this would be a very high profile acquisition of a British business by an Indian. A fitting response to British rule…Indian style???

Eleven Forty Design is a company that custom makes cufflinks. The USP of these cufflinks are that they can made,  1140modeled on a person’s head. Once a photograph is provided, a 3D model is chiseled and made into a cufflink. The cufflinks will be side profiles of the head and can be put together to form a miniature bust displayed on a stand, when they are not used.

However, this is the small stuff.

The same technology called Doppelganger is used to create the Opus Luxury football table. The players on the opus football table can be customized to your own or your friends and family’s heads. Perhaps you can pit your own family against a team of celebrities. A great deal of detail is possible, to the extent that hair can be added and noses chiseled off a-la MJ.

The table features underplay lighting which can change the color of the field, Bubble levels which can help to place the table on level ground, solid cast aluminum player bodies and luxurious handles in leather, wood, metal or a combination of all. The table itself is made of oak, mahogany or walnut and is hand finished and has stainless steel adjustable legs. Being hand finished and highly customized using the latest in design technology, I can only imagine what a piece like this would cost.

MG_Ku_PRC_01I went back to the Agaila Beach managed by the Touristic Enterprises Co. in the hope of finding the Miniature golf course attached to it, open. I had passed by that area and had seen it being built some time back.

It is a proper 18 hole uncomplicated miniature golf course. Adults are charged 3KD and kids above 10, 2KD. Tykes below 10 play for free. You get a putter and a colored golf ball, along with a score card and pencil. The course features sand traps, bridges, waterfalls and some landscaping. The golf course is situated right next to the Agaila Beach entrance but is totally cordoned off and disconnected from the beach. The golf course has its own open parking on the vast open ground next to it and the entrance is a ramp from the main road into this ground. The course was designed by John C Vitale who specializes in highly cost effective courses. This is the only known miniature golf course in Kuwait.

The course was empty today. It is well maintained and well lit. A great way to spend a day.  However, beware of the Pepsi and Aquafina vending machines….

Scrabulous_logoWith a name like Scrabulous, it wouldn’t be long before the game attracted a law suit. More so, because the board, the number of tiles and even the rules are the same as Hasbro’s Scrabble. The brothers who created the online version believed in making the game free for all to play. Initially started as an application on Facebook, the lawsuit forced the creators to take it off Facebook. It has now been spun off as a separate website, signing on thousands of users daily. The action by Hasbro asking Facebook to take the application off, even led to the creation of a group called Save Scrabulous, which instantly found members.

Lawsuit or not its got scrabble lovers hooked for good.
