Arthur Blank, a card manufacturer, has come out with the first card that is made from a renewable source. Corn.

The biodegradeable polymer is manufactured by Natureworks and made from corn and is as customizable as a regular plastic card. Lactic acid from dextrose derived from the corn is crystallized and dehydrated to give a polymer which is used for these cards, packaging and other applications.

The Natureworks process can be found at this link

Using this card:

  • reduces dependency on petro based raw material – 🙂
  • should reduce the number of non-biodegradeable cards that enter the chain after expiry – 🙂
  • Increases the price of food grains?! 😦
